The Batesville School District (BSD) recently announced a donation from the Arkansas State Police Foundation Spouses’ Auxiliary from Troop B to their Safe Haven Baby Box Project.

The project, initiated by a group of fourth-grade students at Sulphur Rock Elementary School, aims to provide a safe and anonymous option for parents in crisis to surrender their newborns. Recognizing the lack of such a resource in a seventy-mile radius, the students, as part of their EAST program, identified this need, BSD said in a media release.

“Our partnership with the Arkansas State Police Foundation Spouses’ Auxiliary from Troop B has been instrumental in advancing this important cause,” said EAST Facilitator Jenine Ottaway. “Their unwavering support not only reinforces the significance of our endeavor but also serves as a testament to their commitment to community welfare.”

The donation comes alongside the involvement of Troop B troopers, reflecting their dedication to community engagement, the district said.

“We are deeply moved by the dedication of our students and the support extended by our partners,” said Sulphur Rock Elementary Principal Melissa Mergy. “Their collaborative efforts exemplify the power of collective action in effecting positive change.”

Thanks to the students’ efforts and the Auxiliary’s contribution, the project has secured a partnership with a local hospital and signed contracts, bringing the Safe Haven Baby Box Project closer to fruition.

“As a district, we are immensely proud of our students’ initiative and the ongoing support from our community partners,” said BSD Superintendent Dr. Ken James. “Together, we are making strides in creating a safer and more compassionate environment for all members of our community.”
