A complaint has been filed in the civil section of Independence County Circuit Court against Lyon College in Batesville on behalf of the school’s former head football coach.

Batesville attorney Tom Thompson filed the complaint against the college on behalf of Kyle Phelps yesterday, March 8.

Phelps, who led Lyon to its first winning season with a 6-5 record last year, stepped down in what some say was a “forced” resignation. (To read a Dec. 1, 2017, statement from Phelps on his departure, click here.)

Along with Phelps, almost all assistant coaches lost their jobs, as well.

The complaint alleges Phelps’ dismissal was a breach of contract and asks for $52,000 that the coach says he is owed by the college. Phelps has asked the court for a jury trial.

White River Now contacted the Lyon College Athletic Department this morning regarding the filing and was told the school does not comment on personnel issues.
