siren-1-9

The Independence County Sheriff’s Department has released the names of the two men involved in a shooting Wednesday night near Desha. (Read the initial story here.)

Sheriff Shawn Stephens said two men were involved in a confrontation Wednesday night at 110 Boyd St., located in the subdivision behind the Desha Flash Market. The sheriff listed them as the shooting victim, Dennis D. Berger, 34, of Sulphur Rock, and the man who fired the shot as Shawn W. Patterson, 47, of Reed Road.

Sheriff Stephens said the victim, Berger, was shot in the right arm with the .22 cal bullet passing through the arm and into his chest. Berger was taken to the White River Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

It seemed the injury was not life-threatening, according to Stephens. The investigation is nearing completion, and it appears the confrontation was over what is called a “bull bar” that was stolen from Patterson Auto Sales and was apparently in the possession of Berger.

The police report said Berger told authorities that he had bought the bar from a Sulphur Rock man, and when he heard it was stolen, he was trying to take it back to the owner. Patterson was taken into custody and could be facing a first-degree battery charge.
