Visit by ex leads to violent altercation in Newark; ex-boyfriend arrested, charged

news-background-1-8

A surprise visit between two exes quickly escalated into an incident involving verbal and physical exchanges; gunshots; a vehicle-ramming; and ultimately the arrest of a Newark man.

On May 3, Kalyssa Burks, 22, came to the residence of her ex-boyfriend, John Austin Hershelman, 22 — a residence Burks had shared with Hershelman until they ended their relationship about a month ago, according to documents from the Independence County Circuit Court.

Burks told authorities she came to pick up some of her belongings.

The verbal and then physical exchange began after Burks entered a bedroom and found another woman in bed and became angry, according to Hershelman’s comments to authorities in court records.

The incident escalated and involved Hershelman shooting in Burks’ direction with a .22-cal revolver and later twice ramming her car with his, causing damage to both, according to court docs.

Hershelman was charged in Independence County Circuit Court with two counts of aggravated assault — both felonies. He was placed under a $15,000 bond, which he met, and was released from jail.

Burks has not been charged.
