A two-car collision on Hwy. 167 in the Southside city limits, just north of the intersection of Southside High School, resulted in one person being killed and two others injured. The crash occurred around 1:45 p.m. Friday, May 11.
According to the preliminary report of Arkansas State Police Cpl. Jeremy Hughes, a 2009 Chrysler driven by James Staton, 80, of Horseshoe Bend was traveling northbound in the left lane on Hwy. 167 when a 2017 Kia driven by Cole Sample, 81, of Batesville was traveling westbound on Upper Twin was making a right hand turn onto 167.
The Kia driven by Sample struck the Chrysler on the front right side with both vehicles coming to rest in the northbound lanes of traffic.
A passenger in Cole Sample’s vehicle, Viola Sample was injured in the crash and taken to CHI St. Vincent’s Infirmary in Little Rock where she was declared deceased. Both Cole Sample and James Staton were injured, with one taken to UAMS in Little Rock and the other to White River Medical Center in Batesville.
Viola Sample was the 144th fatality on Arkansas highways this year.
