A stolen gun was apparently used in the Monday morning fatal shooting at Newark in Independence County.

That’s the word from Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens who noted the gun used was stolen out of Missouri. Stephens said a 33-year-old male suspect is in the Independence County Detention Center awaiting formal charges by Prosecuting Attorney Holly Meyer.

The victim was a 27-year-old male, with the sheriff noting the two are from the Newark/Oil Trough area.

Det. Sgt. Zach Rollins is heading the investigation and is asking for a first-degree murder charge, according to Stephens.

The sheriff said the names of the victim and suspect will be released in the filing of formal charges.

“There are some crazy things that have gone on in the last month or two that ordinary citizens would not imagine happening in this area, and that includes two murders in one month,” said Stephens.

“At these shootings, half or more of our department’s officers have turned out to assist,” the sheriff added. “You don’t know the frame of mind of the shooter.”

Stephens said he expects the prosecuting attorney will act this afternoon on the information provided by investigators.
