The city of Batesville is rolling out new trash carts, with a new method of picking up trash coming in the months ahead.
The new trash carts are part of an initial effort to automate trash pickup in the city. Officials say the city is placing the new carts on a person’s property where the city would like for the property owner to position it on pickup day. It must be within five feet of the nearest public road without blocking the mailbox, utility poles or fire hydrants. The city notes that garbage shall be bagged before being placed in the cart. Loose garbage will not be picked up.
Mayor Rick Elumbaugh said hopefully within 18 months, the city will be equipped to automatically pick up trash.
He said it will be a cost-savings in many ways for the city.
