Man and woman in apparent domestic dispute end up going to jail — but not for the dispute

siren-1-24

An Independence County man and woman involved in a domestic dispute were charged with a felony that had nothing to do with the dispute.

Officers were dispatched to Bethesda Road to a domestic dispute. When the man, 26-year-old Stephen Anthony Smith, finally came out of the residence, he said there was no female in the house, but then later conceded there was, according to officials. Neither Smith nor the woman, 41-year-old Jennifer D. Hartness, wanted to file charges against the other.

However, a long rifle was found in the residence, and since both Smith and Hartness, are previously convicted felons, each was charged with possession of firearms by a certain person (certain person meaning “previously convicted felon”).

Smith was taken into custody and placed on a $7,500 bond. After Hartness was taken into custody, she was placed on a $5,000 bond.
