When Independence County Sheriff’s Deputy Adam McGilton noticed a man in the parking area of the Valero in Pleasant Plains acting strangely, he pulled him to check on him.

The man, later identified as 53-year-old Raymond Berry, was trying to kick his boots off and jerking his head around, according to the deputy.

When McGilton asked Berry if he was okay, Berry replied that he had stepped into a bed of snakes and they were all over his feet.

McGilton told Berry he did not see any snakes and asked Berry if he had been using drugs.

Berry first said no, according to the report, but then said he and his girlfriend “did some earlier in the day.”

McGilton arrested Berry for public intoxication and took him to the Independence County jail.
