The Lyon College men’s basketball team put together a strong performance to end the 2018 portion of its schedule in an exhibition game at NCAA Division I University of Central Arkansas (UCA) on Sunday afternoon. The Scots pulled within single-digits midway through the second half, but the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) Bears sank some key free throws down the stretch to hold off the Scots, 62-47.

Ray Price brought the Scots back within 10 points with 14:44 left to play in a game on a layup before a three-point play by Eric Moses trimmed the deficit to seven at 39-32 just a minute later. After a three-pointer by Aaron Weidenaar pushed the Bears’ lead back up to 10, Moses once again pulled the Scots back within single-digits with a jumper.

UCA answered back with a 12-3 run over the next six minutes on a pair of threes and six free throws to take a 54-37 advantage with 3:54 left to play. The Scots followed with a run of their own after Emir Sabic drilled a pair of three-pointers around a trey by Price to pull back within 10 points, but the Bears would hold off the Scots the rest of the way.

Lyon and UCA played a fairly even first half as neither team led by more than three points until a layup by Matthew Mondesir gave the Bears a five-point cushion with 2:38 remaining. Zalek Sharp sank a pair of free throws after the UCA layup, but the Bears closed the half on a 5-0 run to take a 31-23 lead at the half.

Sabic paced the Scots offensively as he finished with a game-high 14 points, while Moses also ended the game in double-digits with 10 points. Hayden Koval led the Bears with 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Scots will return home after the New Year and open up a three-game American Midwest Conference homestand against William Woods on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
