Residents urged to evacuate after rains erode levee in Jackson County

local-news-white-river-now-12

Heavy rainfall over the past few days prompted Jackson County authorities to issue a non-mandatory evacuation advisory for residents near a levee in a rural section of the county. The heavy rains have eroded the levee, but it has not failed.

County Judge Jeff Phillips told the Associated Press he issued the warning on Tuesday night out of an abundance of caution. The levee is in the southern part of the county, near Highway 224.

After the period of strong precipitation, the White River crested at 29.7 feet near Newport Wednesday afternoon and is in a slow fall. The flood stage at Newport is 26 feet.
