Newark man pleads guilty to murder

A Newark man recently pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Independence County Circuit Court.

John Matthew Goodman, 34, was sentenced to 28 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections for the murder of Steven William Reed, 27, of Newport.

The circuit court information stated Reed had gone to Goodman’s home on July 9, 2018, where he was shot by Goodman as he entered the residence.  

The case was investigated by Independence County Sheriff’s Department detectives and prosecuted by District Prosecuting Attorney Eric Hance and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kellye Barber.  

The case was tried in the court of Judge Tim Weaver.
