The trial date has been set for the teenager charged in Newport Police Lt. Patrick Weatherford’s June 2017 death.
Circuit Judge Harold Erwin has scheduled the trial to begin Aug. 6 for the teenager who is now 18 and charged with capital murder of the Newport Police lieutenant, according to an Associated Press report.
The teen was 16 at the time of the fatal shooting of Weatherford, a 15-year veteran with the Newport Police Department, and has pled not guilty. The teen’s attorney has appealed Erwin’s previous ruling not to move the case to juvenile court, the report noted.
