The Lady Southerners dug a hole to climb out of early in conference action Tuesday at Westside, giving up 4 runs in the first inning and falling behind 10-0 before the bats woke up and a late rally fell short before losing 11-5.
The Warriors retired the first 8 Southerner hitters before walking Carlee Gilpin in the third inning, but left her standing on first as they retired the next hitter.
The Southerners bats showed a little life in the fourth inning when they plated one run off a single by Shelby Warden and a stolen base and a single by Blakeley Floyd, to make it 10-1.
In the fifth inning, the Lady Southerners got hits from Maddie Poole, Katie Dennison, Grace Lawellin and Blakeley Floyd along with 2 walks and played four runs leaving the fifth inning with momentum and the score at 10-5, but the Southerners could not add any to the total in the last 2 innings.
Katie Dennison took the loss in the circle for the Lady Southerners.
The Lady Southerners and Lady Pioneers will square off in conference action Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Southerner field.
The Southerners record falls to 4-3-1 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
