Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens told White River Now this morning that an adult male was found deceased Saturday at the Salado rest area on Highway 167, just south of Batesville.
A man from New Hampshire had been seen in the area for a couple of days before he was found with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Stephens said.
The sheriff said when talking to the deceased man’s family, it appears he was having some emotional problems, but when they last saw him, they noted he was doing well.
Stephens said it was not immediately known why the man was in Arkansas — and in this area, in particular.
He said the man had no family living in this area.
