Pioneer in Independence County law enforcement passes away; first female deputy sheriff for county

A pioneer in Independence County law enforcement passed away at her home last Thursday.

Sandra Kay Mann was 73 years old.

In 1974, Mann was one of the first two EMTs in Independence County, and the first female deputy sheriff in Independence County, serving from 1983 thru 1992.

Mann graduated as salutatorian of her 1963 class at Desha High School.

An outstanding athlete on the basketball court, Mann also played professional basketball with the All-American Redheads and the Southern Belles from November of 1963 to May of 1971.

Mays later served a stint with the White County Sheriff’s Department in the mid-to-late 1990s.

Funeral services are scheduled for today at 2 p.m. at the Qualls Batesville Funeral Service Chapel. Burial will be in the Locust Grove Cemetery.
