This morning, shortly after 10 a.m., a law enforcement caravan began leading the vehicle carrying the body of slain police officer Mike Stephen on his journey back home to Stone County. (A short video of the procession can be seen here on White River Now’s Facebook page.)

Stephen, a sergeant with the Stone County Sheriff’s Office, was shot and killed Thursday morning when he answered a call for a welfare check on a woman at 2021 Flag Rd. near the Stone/Van Buren County line.

Steven was a 20-year law enforcement veteran as well as a veteran of the U.S. Army.

The man who shot Stephen was also killed in the gunfire. His name is yet to be released to the public. Authorities said yesterday, they were having trouble finding next-of-kin.
