Various offices in Stone County to close for funerals of two respected community members; fund established for family of Mike Stephen

Stone County Judge Stacy Avey said this morning that county offices will be closed Wednesday to allow county officeholders and employees to attend funeral services that day.

Mike Stephen, Sr.’s (pictured above, right) funeral is set for Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Calico Rock High School Gymnasium. Visitation is tomorrow from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Eddie’s Family Funeral Home in Calico Rock. (UPDATE, July 22, 4:50 p.m.: The visitation for Sgt. Mike Stephen will now be held Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Calico Rock High School Gymnasium, according to a Facebook post from the Stone County Sheriff’s Office.)

Stephen lost his life in the line of duty answering a call concerning a domestic situation last Thursday. (To read his full obituary, click here.)

An account has also been established for Stephen’s family. Donations can be made to the account at First National Bank of Izard County locations in Mountain View, Calico Rock, Melbourne, or Horseshoe Bend. Donations can also be mailed to: PO Box  1999, Mountain View, AR, 72560.

John Zanders Scroggins’ (pictured above, left) funeral service is also on Wednesday. Scroggins was a longtime Mountain View businessman, having managed Synergy Gas Company in Mountain View for many years. He was well-known and loved in the community. Scroggins, an Army veteran, was born in 1940 at Marcella to Edna and Fleet Scroggins. He passed away Saturday, July 20, in Little Rock. The funeral service for Scroggins will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Flatwoods Baptist Church. Visitation will also be Wednesday afternoon between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Flatwoods. On a side note: The Mountain View City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday night, has also been canceled.
