Authorities say a vehicle “broke down” on State Highway 167 just south of Cave City last Wednesday and was left parked on the shoulder of the highway. The next day, the car  — a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am — was discovered missing.

The vehicle’s owner, Ben Fitzsimmons, told Independence County Sheriff’s Deputy Brent Everett that his brother saw a pickup truck with a trailer near the vehicle early the next morning after it had broken down. Everett said in the incident report when the brother stopped to inquire, he was told by someone in the truck say that they were sent to tow the car. The brother said he left without inquiring further.

The missing vehicle is described is a hard-top, two-door Pontiac Grand Am, red in color.

The case is still under investigation, according to the sheriff’s department.
