UPDATE AND CORRECTION, Aug. 1, 3:00 p.m.: Story has been updated with the identification of the victim. Also, the victim’s age was reported to White River Now as 66 years old, but authorities later corrected the victim’s age as 56.

A 56-year-old male has been killed in the third major traffic accident in Independence County within a week. The accident occurred last night when a driver apparently lost control of his vehicle near the Miller Creek Bridge on East Main Street in Batesville. The vehicle struck a sign and became airborne, flipping multiple times down an embankment, coming to rest partially on the railroad tracks below, according to Batesville Police Chief Alan Cockrill.

Cockrill told White River Now this morning that Batesville Fire Department members used their extraction equipment to remove the driver from the vehicle. The victim was then transported to receive emergency care. Cockrill said the man later died during surgery.

The chief said his department is now attempting to notify next of kin. The victim has been identified as Bryan David Vonalt from Yellville.
