Seniors Luke Shackelford and Elissa Douglass were recognized as Mr. and Ms. Lyon College during the annual Founders’ Day Convocation on Friday, Oct. 18, in Sloan Auditorium.
The annual award is based partially on student body vote and considers academic performance, community and campus involvement, and the students’ potential for future success.
Shackelford, 20, of Smithville, Ark., spent his summer at the University of Chicago’s molecular genetics and cellular biology department, researching neural development and how the neuromuscular system forms. Such participation has provided a window into people who give their lives to science and unveil the hidden mechanisms of the world, according to Shackelford.
Douglass, 22, of League City, Tex., is a Spanish/business double major and also resident director, social chair and director of harm and risk prevention for Phi Mu. In addition, she is active with the wrestling and cheer teams, Spanish club, SOAR (Student Orientation Advising Registration) leader, and student ambassador. She is considering an MBA in human resources.
The following student groups were also recognized on Friday:
President’s Cup, Alpha Xi Delta
Raft Race Design Winners, Dr. Stuart Hutton’s Year One Group
Amazing Race Winners, Professor Dustyn Bork’s Group
The awards were announced before a keynote talk by Dr. Charles Henry, president of the Council of Library and Information Resources. Henry delivered a speech titled, “Riddles: A Spell between Cognitive Science and the Humanities.”
The Lyon College’s Founders’ Day Convocation is an annual event celebrating the College’s 1872 founding.
