Obituary: H.L. Gavin Jr.

H.L. Gavin, Jr., of Cord, Arkansas, departed this life on Friday, Nov. 22, 2019, at the age of 76. He was born Dec. 24, 1942, at Haines City, Florida, the son of Hessie Lee Gavin, Sr., and Lizzie Qualls.

Mr. Gavin owned and operated Gavin’s Service Station at Loughman, Florida prior to moving to Arkansas. Once he moved to Arkansas, he worked for NAPA and Eddies Auto Parts several years. Mr. Gavin was a United States Air Force veteran and enjoyed dirt track racing, gardening, hunting, and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Earnestine “Tina” (Odom) Gavin; three brothers, Thearon “LaDue” Gavin, Mike Gavin, and David Gavin; one sister, Charlotte Sever; and his parents. Mr. Gavin is survived by two sons, Robert Gavin of Cord and Micah Gavin and wife, Harla, of Newark; one daughter, Kathy Womack and husband, Rick, of Tuckerman; two sisters, Wanda Beasley and Talla Jean Gilley; six grandchildren, Melissa Baker, Justin Smedley, Levi Smedley, Abby Gavin, Shyana Gavin, and Taylor Gavin; six great-grandchildren, Bryson Smedley, Peyton Baker, Ryan Baker, Legend Smedley, Allie Smedley, and Ralph Smedley.

Friends may visit at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home, Friday, Nov. 29, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Jackson’s Funeral Home Chapel, with interment in Hopewell Cemetery at Cord.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Micah Gavin, Robert Gavin, Justin Smedley, Levi Smedley, Mark Smedley, and Clint Baker. Arrangements by Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home.
