Obituary: Pearl Smithee

Pearl Smithee, 97, of Newport departed this life Sunday, Dec. 1, 2019.

She was born March 21, 1922, to Oscar and Victoria (Taylor) Lassiter.

She was a member of Diaz Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, worked at Revere Copper and Brass and retired from Wal Mart.  Mrs. Smithee enjoyed watching sports, yard work and gardening.  As a teenager, she played softball and basketball.  She was the pitcher and her sister was the catcher.  She worked in the field with her dad and had her own mules named Kate and Adler.  She tells the story of the day she married; she was pitching a game and her fiancé came by the ballgame and picked her up. They went to town and got married and she had to hurry back to finish pitching the game.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Arlis Smithee, son; Boyce Smithee; parents, Oscar and Victoria Smithee; brothers, Jack Lassiter, Dewey Lassiter, and Joe Lassiter; sisters, Mildred Sutterfield, Edith Snapp, and Sill Evans.

Her survivors are son, Glenn Smithee (Nancy) of Newport; daughter; Betty Lamitina of Little Rock, five grandchildren, Kirk Smithee, Lane Smithee, Lori Nicholson, Gina Robertson, and Kyle Smithee; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
