UPDATE: Batesville Police Chief Alan Cockrill issues a statement regarding Tuesday night’s incident that left three officers injured

Batesville Police Chief Alan Cockrill spoke with White River Now just moments ago about last night’s accident in which three of his officers were struck and injured by a passing motorist during the process of an arrest. (To read more about this story, click here.)

The text of Chief Cockrill’s statement:

“We had three officers involved in an accident last night about 10:40 p.m. The officers are Sgt. Brenda Bittle, age 52, with 30 plus years experience in law enforcement; Patrolman Jordan Akins, he’s 33-years-old with eight years in law enforcement; Patrolman Amber Branscum is 34-years-old with three years in law enforcement. The officers were attempting to stop a vehicle in the 2300-block of Harrison Street/State Highway 69. During the encounter, a fight ensued with the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody after a brief struggle. The officers ended up, after the struggle in the outside eastbound lane of Harrison Street/Highway 69. The white male suspect, who was Tadd Alan Gates, 26-years-old, he’s also a previously convicted felon. They [the officers] were attempting to remove him from the roadway and a passing motorist struck them. Purely accidental. The Arkansas State Police responded, they worked the accident portion of the incident. Investigator Fred Friar and Investigator Jason Bryant are currently conducting the criminal investigation portion of it on the original suspect. All the officers are in various hospitals, but they are currently in stable condition.”
