Both Melbourne Bearkatz teams participate in tournaments to finish out 2019

The Melbourne Bearkatz senior boys took to the hardwood last week, participating in the Maverick division of the Bad Boy Mowers Ronnie Brogdon Invitational at Highland.

The Katz got off to a tough start, falling to Strong, 63-58 to move into the consolation bracket.

Day two was a better day offensively for the boys, but they fell to Star City in a shootout, 88-79.

Day three brought the Katz a breakthrough as they took care of rival Calico Rock, 61-36 to take seventh place in the division.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bearkatz took to the road, spending the week in Springfield, MO as they participated in the Pink and White Lady Classic on the campus of Drury University.

The first day saw the Lady Katz take care of business against Buffalo (MO), 69-32.

Day two proved to be a tougher challenge, as the Lady Katz met Branson (MO) and their Syracuse University signee. It was a defensive battle, but Melbourne came away with the 42-38 win.

The semifinal round brought nationally ranked Oklahoma City Classen (pronounced CLAW-sen) and their three Division One prospects.

Melbourne saw their fortunes turn, falling 62-40.

Monday brought the third-place game and the Republic (MO) Lady Tigers.

The Lady Katz defense stood strong, holding Republic scoreless for an eight-minute stretch in the first half and held off a late rally for a 45-34 win.
