The Melbourne Bearkatz were on the road Wednesday night for a makeup conference game against the Bay Yellowjackets.
The Lady Katz took to the floor first, and after an uncharacteristic first quarter, ran off an 18-0 run in the second quarter, and only allowed four points combined in the last three quarters, winning easily by a score of 55-16.
Jenna Lawrence led the way with 10 points, with seven of her teammates right behind, as it was a very balanced scoring night. Melbourne improves to 23-2 overall, 13-0 in the conference.
The Bearkatz looked to join in on the winning side but were in for a wild night. In a span of around five minutes, four technical fouls were assessed to the Yellowjackets, resulting in a head coach ejection; the Katz capitalized on the ensuing free throws, as all 11 of their second-quarter points came from the FT line.
The Bearkatz couldn’t find anything offensively in the second half but hung around the entire game. Only with some late free throws did the Yellowjackets pull away, as the Katz fell short 45-42.
Roby Cooper led the way for the Katz with 20 points, Layton Hennings added 11. The Bearkatz drop to 15-9, 10-3 in the conference, but can still clinch the conference championship with a win Friday night at Salem.
