Obituary: Debbie Jo McCorkle

Debbie Jo McCorkle, head cashier and the most senior employee at George’s Liquor Store in Newport, passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, at the age of 65 after losing her battle with cancer, the store said in a post on social media.

“She was undeniably a part of the foundation of George’s Liquor Store, and the glue that held this place together so well,” the post read. “Our hearts go out to her family and her loved ones, as we remember this great woman. We ask that you pray for Debbie’s family during this difficult and trying time.”

Debbie Jo McCorkle, of Newport, was born August 6, 1954, in Newport, the daughter of Alonzo “Red” and Velma (Ford) McCorkle.

Debbie was a 1972 graduate of Newport High School and had worked as a medical records clerk for Pinedale Nursing Home for 25 years and for George’s Liquor Store for 15 years.

She loved the outdoors, camping, and vacationing with her family at Daytona Beach.

Debbie was fun and full of life, and pushed the limits by going skydiving last year. She enjoyed taking care of her home. Her greatest joy in life was her family, especially her granddaughter, Katie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Mike McCorkle.

Debbie is survived by her son, Brian McCorkle and his wife, Melisha, of Newport; one grandchild, Katie McCorkle of Newport; one brother, Mitch McCorkle and wife, Janice, of Newport; one sister-in-law, Pat McCorkle of Newport; her nieces and nephews, Susan Simmons and husband, Aric, of Jonesboro, Sherry Moore and husband, Jason, of Quitman, Mike McCorkle and wife, Cindy, of Bella Vista, and Dean Douhitt of Newport; and a lifetime of friends.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mitchell Jean Ford officiating.

Interment will follow in Coffeyville Cemetery.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Tyler Jackson, Sjon Hodge, Adam Grendell, Jason Lachance, John Dickerson, and Steve Westmoreland. Honorary pallbearers are the Staff of George’s Liquor, C&C Distributors, and O’Connor Distributing.
