Obituary: Thelma Elizabeth Cockrill

Thelma Elizabeth Cockrill, 89 of Newport, departed this life for eternal rest with her Lord on Monday, Feb. 24, 2020.

She was born July 1, 1930, in Elgin, AR to Jack and Belle (Davis) Hembrey.

Cockrill was a long time member of Diaz Baptist Church and retired LPN.

She used her medical knowledge to care for her family. Additionally, she was a talented and skilled seamstress, decoupage artist of eggs, for many years made beautiful cakes for family and friend events, loved gardening, and raising flowers.

Cockrill was preceded in death by her husband, D.V. “Penn” Cockrill; parents; brother, T.J. Hembrey; sisters, Sue Brasheres, Johnnie Armstrong, Emily Layton, and Betty Stoner.

Survivors include one son, Doug (Leslie) Cockrill of Newport; two daughters, Phyllis (late John) Tyrrell of Conway, and Robin (Rick) Burrow of Camden Wyoming, DE; brothers, Hub (Joyce) Hembrey, of Tuckerman, and Jack (Sandy) Hembrey, of Newport; sisters, Christine (Bill) Roberts, of Vidalia, LA, and Katie (Doyle) Hawk, of Newport; six grandchildren, Leanne Tyrrell of Conway, Heather (Justin) Tharp of Conway, Rebecca (Andy) Frankum of Milton, DE, Eric (Marrisa) Cockrill of Little Rock, Rainer (Cindy) Burrow of Lancaster, PA, Laci (Seth) Davis of Newport; two great-grandsons, Isaac and Eli Tharp of Conway; and two great-granddaughters, Odette Frankum of Milton, DE and Caroline Cockrill of Little Rock.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, at Dillinger Funeral Home Chapel in Newport with burial at Watson Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Billy Cockrill, Steve Cockrill, Brian Cockrill, Terry Rush, Eric Cockrill, Seth Davis, and Justin Tharp.
