Independence County Deputy Sheriff Chris Martin stopped a man traveling north through Southside after he clocked him going 20 miles per hour over the speed limit.

Deputy Martin said the man’s vehicle almost ran off the highway before it was stopped.

Martin said when he pulled the vehicle over at the bottom of Ramsey Mountain, he could smell intoxicants coming from the driver.

The driver was identified as Keith C. Jennings, 30, of Independence County.

Deputy Martin said Jennings denied he was speeding or that he almost wrecked his vehicle coming down Ramsey Mountain.

Martin said he administered standardized field sobriety tests to Jennings, who did not test well at all.

Deputy Martin said Jennings was administered a Blood Alcohol Content test at the jail and measured 0.30, almost four times what is considered intoxicated.

Deputy Martin said he charged Jennings with driving while intoxicated and speeding.
