Prosecutors have charged a man with stealing a utility terrain vehicle and giving it to a relative to satisfy a debt.

The Stone County Circuit Court information says Matthew Thomas Martin (pictured), 27, of Independence County, borrowed the UTV, valued at $5,000, from a Stone County man.

Later, Martin apparently called the owner and asked him “how much he wanted” for the UTV, a 2007 Polaris Ranger. According to court info, the owner quoted a price, but Martin kept the UTV, but would never pay him for it.

It was later learned that Martin had given the UTV to a relative to satisfy a debt, according to court records.

Independence County authorities recovered the UTV and returned it to the owner.

Martin has been charged with felony theft. His bond was set at $2,500.

At the time of the court filing, Martin was in the Stone County Jail, charged with theft by receiving. That case involves a stolen gooseneck trailer.
