Gary Shumate of Weldon departed this life on Saturday, April 18, 2020, at the age of 59. He was born September 15, 1960, at Stuttgart, the son of James Arthur and Nellie (Lawson) Shumate.
He was a 1978 graduate of Newport High School, and a member of Ducks Unlimited, Jackson County Conservation District, and Farm Bureau. Gary was a crop duster, and a self-employed farmer, co-owning Shumate Brothers Farms. He lived and breathed agriculture, and especially loved farming.
Several years ago, Gary had owned a real estate company, and a duck club, as well. Gary had a quick wit, great hair, and was the life of the party. He was a hard worker, who always stood up for his principles. Most of all, he loved his family.
He was a member of the Newport First Baptist Church.
Gary was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by one son, Gary Shumate of Newport; one daughter, Kaitlin Shumate Bridgeman and husband, Morgan, of Newport; his mother, Nellie Lawson Shumate of Cabot; one brother, Dale Shumate of Weldon; one sister, Barbara Shown of Cabot; his companion, Leslie Bradford Shumate of the home; and a lifetime of friends.
Graveside services are 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2020, at Sandhill Cemetery with Bro. Greg Dills officiating.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Tony Holder, Jud Shumate, David Freppon, Scotty Tooley, Joe DuPree, Dennis Hagar, Scott Shumate, and Wade Roetzel.
