Obituary: Raymond Gorchik

Raymond “Ray” Gorchik of Newport, Arkansas departed this life on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, at the age of 93. He was born on Oct. 21, 1926, in Scanlon, Pennsylvania the son of Stephen Gorchik and Anna Patrick Gorchik.

Gorchik was an over the road truck driver for ABF Freight, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Cherokee Street Church of Christ. Mr. Gorchik greatly enjoyed fishing and camping and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.

Gorchik was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of the Naval Construction Battalion known as the Seabees. He served much of his service in Okinawa, Japan. Mr. Gorchik was a member and past Commander of the Collier-Massey Post 4683 V.F.W.

His greatest love and enjoyment came from time spent with his wife, Doris, and their children, and he especially delighted in his grandchildren. Mr. Gorchik will be fondly remembered for his generosity.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris (Gilmore) Gorchik on Aug. 14, 2016, his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

He is survived by two sons, Donald Eugene Smith, Jr. and wife, Helen, and Benjamin Winfield Smith and wife, Sherry, all of Newport; four grandchildren, Weston Tyler Smith, Warren Ray Smith, Pam Barnes, and Kimberly McCartney; and two great-grandchildren, Ashton Barnes and Allison Barnes.

Friends may visit at the funeral home, Thursday, May 28, 2020, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, May 29, 2020, at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery with John Harvey officiating.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Weston Smith, Warren Smith, Mike Warren, Dan Haygood, Harold Gibbs, David Black, and Shane Hutchinson.
