Obituary: Albert Glover Haigwood

150x204-7428837

Albert Glover Haigwood departed this life at his home on Saturday, May 30, 2020, at the age of 88. He was born on April 10, 1932, in the small community of Stranger’s Home near Alicia in Lawrence County. He was the middle son of Vernon and Artie Freeman Haigwood. Glover spent his early years working with his other two brothers, Adrin and Shirley Haigwood on the family farms.

He met and married Norma Hoggard in 1950. They had their first child, Shairon Haigwood Fellows in August of 1952, and their son, Timothy Glover Haigwood followed in May of 1960. During these years, he worked several extra jobs and had his own music band known as, “The Arkansas Melody Boys”, of which he was the lead singer and guitarist. They played dances all over the state of Arkansas, and into Missouri during the night, then he would work on the farm during the day. This was a difficult task for him, since there was no time for rest, causing him to make the decision to continue farming and giving up a music career.

In 1954, he and his brother, Shirley Haigwood, were given the choice to move from their home in Lawrence County to farm Robert Dorsey Wilmans Jr.’s farms in Jackson County. This choice changed all their lives for the best.

Glover and Shirley formed their corporation, known as Haigwood Brother’s Farms, and became very successful at farming.

Glover was a member of and a supporter of Farm Bureau many years and has been very loyal to their program. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing bluegrass music, as well as camping at Gunnar’s Pool. Most of all, he loved his family. He is very involved in his small Missionary Baptist church in the Macks community and loves his church family. Glover was a fine Godly man and was a fair man of honor.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma Jean (Hoggard) Haigwood; two brothers, Adrin and Shirley Isaac Haigwood; and his parents.

Glover is survived by his wife, Betty Robinson Haigwood of the home; one son, Timothy Glover Haigwood and wife, Janet, of Newport; one daughter, Shairon Kaye Haigwood Fellows of Newport; his step-children, Leon Nicholson and wife, Nancy, of Fayetteville, Shelby Norris, Jr., and wife, Tracy of Jonesboro, and Dena Branham and husband, Bobby of Russellville; three grandchildren, Holly Best Fellows Wilmans and husband, Rex Wilmans, Jr., Sarah Ashton Haigwood, and Shara Allison Haigwood Cameron and husband, Shannon; one great-granddaughter, Henley Jane Cameron; and a lifetime of friends.
