Obituary: Sherrill “Bill” Jones

Sherrill “Bill” Jones departed this life on May 29, 2020. Born on December 30, 1925, in Jacksonport, he was a life long resident. Bill was a proud US Marine Veteran serving in WW2 #3rd Marine Division. Battles include Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima. Bill was also a Korean Era War Veteran serving in the U.S Air Force. Bill was stationed in Great Britain. On December 18, 1954, he married the love of his life, Laverne Odom Jones.

Bill worked at Victor Metal for many years. He was also a skilled carpenter and fisherman.  Bill’s love for his small town of Jacksonport is evident as he was the first recording secretary for the newly reincorporated town in the early 1960s. Bill also coached the Jacksonport women’s softball team winning the league tournament.

Bill was a member of the Massey-Alexander Levee Board. He helped secure the funds to raise the levee after the last flood in the 1980s. Bill was a member of the Jacksonport Baptist Church for 65 years serving their in many capacities and was true to his faith till the end.

Bill was preceded in death by his father; Hairm Jones Sr., and his mother Delia, four brothers; Paul Massey, Hairm Jones, Jr., Elwood Jones, and Allen Kennith Jones.

Bill is survived by the love of his life Laverne, son Ron Jones of New Orleans, La., two daughters; Shirley and Sherry, brothers; Douglas (Mickie) of Heber Springs, Freeman (Chris) of Harrison, a beloved sister Mary Frances Olsen (Larry) of Woodward, Iowa, and sister-in-law Nina Jones of Hartford, Mich.

Special Recognition: Earl & Fay Steen Family, Patricia Deville, Linda Eskew, Susie Pierce, Sue & Dave Durham, Betty Smart and Family, Connie Martin, Joyce Guffey, Bruce Kleski, Extended family members of the Jones family, members of the Jacksonport Baptist Church, residents of the town of Jacksonport.

Services will be officiated by Bro. Billy Ed Morris, Bro. Ray Fultner, and son, Ronnie Jones.

Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Bill Ferguson, Henry Gibbs, Jason Walker, Donald Roberts, Kenny Dingman, and Mike Warren.
