Sheriff to review video circulating showing tense situation during early morning incident call

UPDATE, 8:00 a.m., June 23, 2020: Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens issued this statement late Monday afternoon regarding the incident: “The deputy involved in the incident has been placed on administrative leave, and an investigation is underway by the sheriff’s office.” The sheriff said he preferred not to release names in the incident since the deputy involved has already been receiving threats.

UPDATE: Approximately 2 p.m., June 22, 2020: Sheriff Stephens’ statement regarding the incident has been posted on the department’s Facebook page as shown below:

Independence County Sheriff comment on video

Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens said this morning he will hold comment until he thoroughly reviews a video that has been circulating online, showing an Independence County Sheriff’s Deputy apparently upset with an individual during a call to which the deputy was responding.

Stephens said he was notified of the video at 4:30 a.m. Monday.

“I’ve got his video downloaded from his body camera, but I have not reviewed it yet.,” Stephens said Monday morning. “I’m going to do that this morning to be able to review and answer the complaint.”
