Three die in two separate vehicle accidents Sunday night

A two-vehicle accident on Highway 69 in Independence County around 6:40 Sunday night left two dead and two injured.

In his preliminary report, Arkansas State Police Cpl. Jeremy C. Hughes said a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox going north on 69, and driven by Okoya Ward, 21, of Batesville, traveled into the southbound lane and struck the front of a 1998 Nissan Sentra driven by Gilberto H. Villatoro-Ochoa, 40. Villatoro-Ochoa and a passenger in the Ward vehicle, Dorothy M. Childress, 45, of Batesville were killed in the accident.

Ward and another passenger in his vehicle were injured and taken to the White River Medical Center.

Hughes said the weather was cloudy and the road condition was dry at the time of the accident.

Another fatal accident just minutes prior to the Highway 69 incident claimed the life of Jonesboro man in the 1600 block of Coon Creek Road. Authorities say around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, a 1997 Dodge Ram, driven by Brandon Bishop of Charlotte, slid off the roadway on the right, and then overcorrected again, with the vehicle coming to a rest in the west ditch line.

A passenger in the pickup, identified as Johnathan Easley of Jonesboro, 24, died in the crash. Bishop and another passenger in the accident were injured and taken to the White River Medical Center

The weather was clear, and the roadway dry at the time of the accident, according to the report.
