Swifton man dies in 4-wheeler accident in Independence County

Early Saturday morning, a Swifton, Ark., man was killed in a 4-wheeler accident on Pageant Island Road in Independence County.

Independence County Sheriff Shawn Stephens said the victim, identified as Jaxson Bailey Steele (pictured), 20, was riding a 2019 Honda 4-wheeler west on Pageant Island Road around 1:30 Saturday morning when the vehicle slid off the roadway, into a ditch, and overturned.

Steele was ejected from the 4-wheeler and landed on the west side of the ditch.

A friend of the victim said he had been 4-wheeling with two other men when the accident occurred.

Steele was born in Jonesboro, the son of Shannon Steele and Kristy Bailey Smiltnieks. He graduated from Tuckerman High School and then attended the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville. He was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church in Tuckerman.

Visitation is Tuesday, June 30, at Dillinger Funeral Home at 2001 Highway 367 North, in Newport from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The graveside service will be Wednesday, July 1, at 10 a.m. at Arnold Cemetery in Swifton.

Dillinger Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of arrangements.
