Batesville School Board discusses items including athletics and mask policy Monday night

The Batesville School Board met for regular business Monday night at the Batesville High School Cafeteria to discuss regular business items and gearing up for the upcoming school year.

The board heard a presentation from Michael Dobbs of First Security Bank regarding the refinancing of an existing bond to a lower interest rate that will save the district over $800,000 over the life of the bond. The board voted unanimously on all items pertaining to the refinancing of the bond.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Hester shared the Mask Exemption Policy for the district. The adoption of such a policy was recommended by the Arkansas School Board Association to assist in guiding administration in handling scenarios of refusal to wear a face-covering as prescribed by Governor Asa Hutchinson’s current statewide mandate.

The board voted to adopt the policy.

Dr. Hester also briefly discussed the Arkansas Activities Association activity arrangements. The district has to submit plans for a large and small venue for athletic events.

“We have to create a large outdoor venue and small venue for activities as long are we’re under this emergency order. One of our goals is to have cohort groups that do not mix,” said Hester.

Hester then further explained how visiting and home spectators, band, students, and more would be separated by sections. Multiple concession stands are planned to be in service to keep cohorts from mixing, opening access to other restroom facilities, and bringing in extra bleachers to allow for additional physical distancing are just a few of the points mentioned with Volleyball and Football season starting soon.

Class resumes next Monday, Aug. 24.
