An 18-wheeler with all it could carry of 50-pound bags of flour, turned onto its side Saturday afternoon in the middle of Ramsey Mountain. right in front of the “Welcome to Batesville” sign on Highway 167.
The truck was coming down Ramsey Mountain when it went off Highway 167, turning over on its side directly in front of the sign. Although the cab suffered significant damage, the driver managed to escape injury.
Independence County Emergency Management Director for Independence County Glen Willis said the vehicle was coming from Rogers and heading to Pocahontas for Peco Foods. Willis said he was surprised the driver used a route through Batesville.
Willis said the turnover occurred around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, and the highway was completely reopened around 10 p.m. Luckily, for the most part, three lanes remained open on 167, and traffic flowed with relative ease.
Willis said unloading the cargo of 50-pound sacks of flour took quite a while because it was difficult to get access to the load. Willis noted that most all the cargo was put in dumpsters and removed from the scene. Willis said there was little of the cargo that spilled, and most of that was from between side panels of the truck.
