The Melbourne Bearkatz overcame a sluggish offensive start to win their home opener over the Quitman Bulldogs by a score of 34-6.
After forcing a three and out on the opening possession, it was special teams that got the Katz on the board, as Eli Harrell took the ensuing punt 68 yards for a touchdown.
The Bulldogs answered back with a long fumble recovery for a touchdown before Melbourne got a Riley gray touchdown run, one of his two nights, taking a 14-6 lead into the halftime break.
The defense was the name of the game in the second half, as the Katz’s stalwart front seven stymied the Quitman offense while scoring three, second-half touchdowns to set the final margin. The Bearkatz host Cave City next week.
