The U.S. Department of Education approved the fiscal year 2020 Student Support Services (SSS) Program grant application for the TRIO SSS program at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville (UACCB). The grant award is anticipated to continue for five years, ending August 31, 2025, the university said in a news release on Tuesday.

Student Support Services is a grant program funded by the U.S. Department of Education whose mission is to advance and defend the ideal of equal educational opportunity by helping disadvantaged students overcome economic, social, academic, and cultural barriers to higher education.

Students who are low-income, a first-generation college student, or have a documented disability are eligible to join the program. Students must also be a U.S. citizen or national of the U.S., possess the potential and motivation for college success, and demonstrate the academic need for support. UACCB TRIO SSS participants are expected to receive a minimum of three project services per semester.

Support services are free to all TRIO SSS participants and include academic advising, career development, tutoring, transfer assistance/advising, computer lab access, technology check-out, workshops, cultural events, and scholarships.

“The staff and I in TRIO are so happy to be refunded for another five years,” said Ronda McLelland, director of TRIO/Student Support Services. “It has been an absolute pleasure to work with UACCB students in achieving their goals in education, and we are excited about being able to provide these wonderful services to UACCB students for another five years.”

Those interested in more information or applying to the UACCB TRIO Student Support Services program can call (870) 612-2173.
