A late-afternoon blaze Wednesday caused major damage to a duplex building at 476 Heber Springs Rd. near the Clearview neighborhood.

The Desha Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chip Phillips told White River Now’s Gary Bridgman Thursday morning no one was injured in the fire that started in the area of the back doors. The fire managed to get into the attic of the building and then quickly spread, but department personnel did manage to contain the blaze, Phillips said.

The chief did not give a dollar estimate of the damage, although he said it was extensive. He noted it might be possible to rebuild, using part of the structure.

Phillips said there were renters on both sides of the duplex, and the heat and smoke from the blaze caused considerable damage.
