Behind a team-high 28 points by Jade Giron and a second straight double-double by Paige Kelley (13 points, 15 rebounds), the 22nd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team improved to 6-0 (6-0 American Midwest Conference) with a 70-57 win over the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy (7-4, 3-3 AMC) on Thursday night.

Marleigh Dodson broke an 8-8 tie in the first quarter with a three-pointer before Giron and Katie Turner knocked down back-to-back buckets to give the Scots a 15-8 lead. The Scots continued to control the momentum against the Eutectics and led, 24-13, after the first quarter on a free throw by Kelley.

The Scots extended their lead to as many as 17 midway through the second quarter as a three-pointer by Giron gave Lyon a 36-19 lead. UHSP would close the quarter on a 12-3 run and cut the Scots’ lead to 39-31 at the half.

After a quick bucket by UHSP to start the third quarter, Lyon pushed its lead to 48-34 on a layup by Giron. A pair of free throws by Kelley at the 4:34 mark gave Lyon a 52-37 lead, but UHSP rallied back and trimmed the deficit to 10, 55-45, with just over a minute left in the quarter. The Scots got one final bucket by Giron and led, 57-45, after three quarters.

A jumper by Grace Beyer pulled the Eutectics within nine, 58-49, with 8:41 left to play, but that would be as close as UHSP would get the rest of the way as Lyon controlled a double-digit lead the rest of the quarter after a free throw by Kelley in the Scots’ next possession.

Turner also scored in double figures as she finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Giron just missed out on a triple-double as she ended the night with nine rebounds and eight assists.

The Scots will travel to Harris-Stowe for their next game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
