Lyon College limited Harris-Stowe to just 29% shooting from the field

ST. LOUIS — The 22nd-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball team held Harris-Stowe to just 29% shooting from the field in a 69-51 American Midwest Conference victory on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Scots improved their perfect record to 7-0 (7-0 AMC), while HSSU fell to 3-5 (3-2 AMC).

Five straight points by Paige Kelley broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Scots a five-point advantage before Haley Wesley and Jade Giron (pictured) added to the total and put Lyon ahead, 12-2. HSSU went on to cut the deficit in half late in the quarter with a 5-0 run.

The Hornets fought their way back into the game and knotted the score at 18-18 before the Scots responded with a 7-0 run to take a 25-18 lead. Blysse Harmon put the Scots up, 31-20, later in the quarter with a bucket before Giron knocked down a pair of free throws that gave Lyon a 33-20 lead at the half.

The Scots began to pull away from the Hornets midway through the third quarter as a layup by Marleigh Dodson sparked a 7-0 run and gave Lyon a 47-27 advantage. The Scots’ lead grew to as many as 22 in the quarter before a free throw by the Hornets put the score at 53-32 in favor of Lyon at the end of the third period.

Harris-Stowe pulled back within 15 late in the fourth quarter but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way as Lyon cruised to a 17-point victory.

Giron once again flirted with a triple-double as she finished with a game-high 23 points to go along with eight assists and seven rebounds. Kelley also finished in double figures scoring with 14 points and six rebounds.

The Scots will travel to Williams Baptist on Thursday night for another AMC matchup at 5:30 p.m.
