Melbourne Lady Bearkatz squeezed past the Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets in an intense matchup Thursday night, 44-42

Melbourne Junior Kenley McCarn hit a tough shot from the baseline with .02 left on the clock to give Melbourne a 44-42 victory over the Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets.

The game was close throughout with neither team holding more than a six-point lead.

McCarn would hit a shot at the end of the first quarter to tie the score at 16.

In the second quarter, Mountain View’s Josie Storey hit a running jumper with 3:08 to go to give the Lady Yellowjackets a 25-19 lead.

Melbourne would close the gap to two points before Mountain View’s Emry Johnson would get a rebound and put back with one second to go in the quarter to give the Lady Yellowjackets a slim 29-25 halftime advantage.

Melbourne would go on a 4-0 run to start the third quarter and tie the game at 29.

The Lady Bearkatz would build that lead to 39-33 when Josie Roark hit a layup.

Mountain View would get a basket from Aubrey Isbell and Chaelann Vickers to close the gap to 39-37 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter saw tough defense on both sides as neither team scored until Melbourne’s Kylee Humphries hit a shot from the low block with 4:17 to go to give the Lady Bearkatz a 41-37 lead.

Mountain View’s Kennedy Holland would get a rebound and a putback to close the gap to 41-39.

Roark would hit a free throw to increase the lead to 42-39, before Mountain View’s Storey would connect on a three-pointer to tie the score at 42-42, setting the stage for McCarn’s winning shot.

Mountain View was led by Isbell and Storey each scoring 11 points, Johnson adding eight points, Vickers and Holland had six points each as they dropped to 14-3 overall on the season.

Melbourne was led by McCarn who had 14 points, Jenna Lawrence 13 points, Roark with seven points. The Lady Bearkatz improved to 20-1.
