Obituary: Oma Jean Brown

Oma Jean (Barnes) Brown, 83, of Cushman, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2021.

She was born June 9, 1937, in Cushman, Arkansas to Verner Barnes and Vida (Skelton) Barnes.

Oma Jean was a member of the Cushman Assembly of God. Prior to college, she played basketball for the Redheads; the team was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2012 and as an individual, she was inducted into the Independence County Sports Hall of Fame. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Arkansas College and received her Master’s and Administrative Degree from ASU.

She was an elementary school teacher and principal of Cushman School for 33 years.

Oma Jean was strong-willed, caring, and a loving woman; she loved her family dearly and enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s sporting events.

She fixed lunch every Sunday for her family. She also enjoyed working in her flower garden and she was still bush hogging at age 80!

Survivors include her two sons, Tim Brown (Beth) of Cushman and Roger Brown (Vernece) of Sandtown; two sisters, Billie Hollowell of Mt. Pleasant and Hazel Roberts (Johnnie) of Derby, Kansas; five grandchildren, Robbee Brown (Britanny), Ryan Brown, Tess Brown, Tonya Wojcik (Tom) and Trent Bradley (Brittany); eleven great-grandchildren, Rylen Brown, Jordyn Brown, Deklinn Brown, Kailee Gooch, Klara Gooch, Brayden Wilson, Macey Wilson, Carson Stevenson, Easton Marlow, Esther Bradley, and Lawson Bradley; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leasle S. Brown Jr.; and nephew, Ricky Hollowell.

Pallbearers Robbee Brown, Ryan Brown, Charlie Traub, Bryan Key, Trent Bradley, Roy Skelton. Honorary pallbearers will be Brayden Wilson, Dustin Sanders, David Diemer, Danny Franks, Bryan Harmon, Dennis Moore, Robert Vickery, and Randy Burns.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2021, at Cushman Assembly of God with Carl Blankenship officiating.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Cushman.

Visitation will be held from noon until service time at the church.
