The Batesville Community Theater and Batesville Area Arts Council recently announced the 2021 recipients of the John & Donna Saltzman Scholarships.

The John & Donna Saltzman Award is given to two graduating seniors who have shown outstanding performance in the arts and humanities.

Brandon Grant (pictured left) is this year’s Batesville High School recipient. BHS Director of Choirs Alicia Davidson highlighted his achievements in academics and abilities, not only as a vocalist and a musician but also as a leader.

“I have never seen a young musician as dedicated to practice as Brandon,” Davidson said. “He has made All-Region and All-State in not only voice, but in other musical ensembles as well. This does not happen without dedication to precision and excellence.”

Grant plans to attend the University of Central Arkansas in the fall to study vocal performance.

Victoria Sparks (right) is this year’s Southside High School recipient. SSHS Choir Director Angie Weaver emphasized her extensive involvement in choir at Southside High School and her high academic achievements.

“Tori has made the All-Region choir every year since joining choir and has also been in the All-State choir the last two years,” said Weaver. “This year she placed 3rd chair Soprano 1 in the region and will again be auditioning for All-State.”

Sparks is also planning to attend the University of Central Arkansas to major in theatre at Arkansas State University in the fall to major in music education.

“I truly believe she will be an amazing music educator,” stated Weaver.

John & Donna Saltzman were proponents of all of the arts and worked with students and adults in our community for over twenty years. Their devotion to theater and the arts set them apart in the fast-paced world in which we live, the Batesville Area Arts Council said in a statement.
