The Independence County Quorum Court met Monday night in regular session to handle both June and July business.

The June agenda was easily breezed through, as there were no additional items outside of routine reports from the Sheriff, Treasurer, and Roads Departments.

The July agenda held regular business items, four ordinances, and other resolutions.

Ordinance 2021-19 was an amendment to the annual budget for 2021 for the purpose of establishing a budget for the American Rescue Plan funds. The court approved using some of the funds received from the American Rescue Plan to purchase a Clearpass Body Scanner for the Independence County Detention Facility. A proposed ordinance (2012-18) was amended and approved for appropriating grant funds to the Sr. Citizen Fund for purposes of purchasing various items for the county’s Meals on Wheels program.

Ordinance 2021-20 was an amendment to the annual budget for 2021 for the amendment of the County General Fund/Coroner Budget for the purpose of appropriating funds.

“We had a gentleman found deceased. He had a large amount of cash on him…We determined the best thing to do is to put this in a fund, take out the expenses for the funeral home, and send the rest of it to the state. This is one of those oddball things, probably never happened in the county’s history, but that’s how we’re trying to deal with it,” Judge Robert Griffin said in reference to Ordinance 2021-20.

Ordinance 2021-21 was an ordinance amending the annual budget for 2021 for the purpose of modifying positions/salaries and transferring funds between line-items in the County Clerk budget.

Two resolutions were heard and approved on Monday night.

Resolution 2021-10 allows Judge Robert Griffin to execute an agreement with Caterpillar Financial Services Corporation on behalf of the Independence County Road Department to purchase certain equipment.

Resolution 2021-11, similar to the above, allows Judge Griffin to execute an agreement to purchase Mack Trucks for the County with U.S. Bancorp Government Leasing and Finance.
