A fiery airplane crash, not far from the Melbourne school campus, claimed the life of the pilot Monday morning.
Izard County Chief Deputy Sheriff Charley Melton said his office was called to the scene of the crash around 11:15 a.m.
Melton said the plane burned, but it appears there was only the pilot in the aircraft. The aircraft hit the ground south of the Melbourne airport.
No one on the ground was apparently injured in the crash, but the aircraft did hit a short distance from a residence, Melton said.
