According to a release from the Sharp County Sheriff’s Office, a male juvenile, thought to be a runaway, was found in Sharp County on Arkansas Highway 175 near Hardy on Friday, Aug. 13.

Sharp County Deputy Sheriff Marc Boyd and a Hardy police officer located the juvenile, confirmed he was not a runaway, and loaded him and his bicycle into Boyd’s vehicle to be taken home. Boyd even treated the youth to ice cream at a nearby convenience store, the release said.

However, on the way back, authorities say the youth pulled a pistol out of his backpack and shot through the deputy’s cage, wounding Boyd in the arm.

Boyd was taken to the White River Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.

The juvenile was taken into custody, awaiting the filing of formal charges.
